Boardman Tree Farm | A Magical Day in the Trees

This tree farm along Interstate-84 in the northern part of Oregon has been a sight my family and I have noticed for many years as we drove back and forth between Oregon and Montana. For most of those years we would just look in awe as we passed by the Boardman tree farm, wanting to stop but really having no reason to stop. It was always a shout-out of "Look, there are the trees!" and we would stare in awe at the rows and rows of poplar trees whirling out our windows. I put a mental note on my photography bucket list that I would return here to take photographs in the trees. The majority of our trips are in the winter and summer, but last year I was driving back to Montana for a fall wedding and could not believe the colors as I drove by the trees. On the return to Oregon, I pulled along the side road and sat in total awe at the beauty. As soon as I got home I looked up information about how I could get into this tree farm as it was clear this was private property and trespassers could face consequences. I had to see more though and that's when I found out about A Very Poplar Run. I registered my boys and I immediately for the 1-mile fun run and have never been so happy to wake up long before the sun to drive for 3 hours for a run.I decided this was going to become an annual tradition for us so I was crushed when I found out that the tree farm was being sold to a dairy farm. These rows and rows of gorgeous trees are being cut down to be replaced with cows and crops. We registered for the fun run again this fall, the last one ever to be held at the tree farm. Our good friends from Montana met us there and we spent the night before at the River Lodge and Grill along the Columbia River. We woke up to the most gorgeous Oregon fall day, a perfect day to spend running and playing in the trees. This place is absolutely magical and indescribable. The photos don't even begin to do justice to the experience of being inside this enchanted forest. The transition and sale is happening over several years so we will be able to experience this wonder for awhile longer. I am so grateful that I was able to visit this beautiful, awe-inspiring place in Oregon.Heidi Heaphy Photography is a wedding and portrait photographer in Portland, Oregon, the Oregon coast, and the greater Pacific Northwest.
